Ryan Wilks is a self-taught artist based in Kansas City. His work explores the various realities of queer existence. Primarily creating with oils and watercolors, his work sheds light on queer expression of spirituality and sexuality. His bodies of work almost always confront religious persecution, specifically within the Christian faith, and explore new modes of prayer via visual and participatory showings. While Christian icons such as the Devil are utilized within his figures, the work itself does not adopt the feeling of Christian iconography, instead it invites the viewer to participate in a modernized expression of spirit.
